Toby Chiang
Dance Instructor
Watching Janet Jackson's MTVs during Toby's adolescent years flicked his love switch for dancing that only came to grow in intensity over time. Each class with Toby is a unique journey in which he takes together with his students; he works hard to ensure that the overall dance experience is a meaningful and fulfilling one. Toby has a pleasant disposition, is highly encouraging and always approachable, and above all, he is a teacher that can be looked upon as a friend.
A versatile and talented dancer capable of a wide genre of dances, Toby constantly challenges himself to bring the art of Hip Hop, Jazz, Reggae, Japanese/ Korean Pop and House to new platforms. Dance, he believes, is a form of self expression and a means of communicating in a poetic way that cannot be articulated by words; he pays close attention to how emotions are portrayed in his choreography. Not afraid of experimenting with different dance styles, he freely fuses unlikely schools, such as Ballad and Hip Hop, with surprisingly delightful results.
Among the numerous dance competitions he has taken part in and gained recognition for, the one that was most memorable would be winning an award at the Hip Hop International, in Melbourne, Australia, in 2004.
Besides being a backup dancer for Taiwanese pop singer Jolin Tsai & Aaron Yan, Hong Kong veteran singer Francis Yip, local artistes Derrick Hoh, Hagen Tan, he was also the choreographer and backup dancer for Taufik Batisah in 2016. Additionally, aside from participating in shows for businesses like Mykita, Moet Hennessy Diageo Singapore, Canon Singapore, Givenchy, HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank, Toby was also appointed the master choreographer for Channel News Asia Luminary Award.
Keen to engage more actively in the local art scene, Toby formed an all-girls dance team - La Femme, who was first runner-up in their virgin dance competition "Dream Catchers - Love to Dance" on 6 June 2011.
