When we see an older person struggling to walk do we really appreciate what it must be like to be the shadow of the person we once were? Do we really understand what the aging process involves? In Part 4 of our panel discussion on Growing Old in Singapore our experts discuss the ageing process and what it means to be old.
Professor K. Ranga Krishnan, Dean of the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, gives us an insight into how loneliness can lead to health problems. He explains in depth the withdrawal process and how loneliness leads to depression and heart problems.

Growing Old in Singapore (Part 6): Retirement Villages

Are there enough services for the old? If not, what can be done to make things better for senior citizens? In Part 6 of our discussion on  Growing Old in Singapore we look at the future of retirement services. Are there enough services for the old? If not, what can be done to make things better for senior citizens? Leading the discussion, Janice Chia, founder of  Ageing Asia Pte Ltd, talks about her desire to change the way future generations of elderly age in the Asia Pacific. Her mission is to engage the business community to create better products and services that will enable healthy, independent and dignified ageing. Explaining more about her plans for virtual retirement villages Janice sees the sandwiched middle classes as her target customers. “I think in Singapore, if you are really poor, you can apply for a lot of government subsidies to help you and if you are really, really rich, you can pay for your own thing.”The scheme is membership based and has an activity co-ordinator for every 30-50 members. Services cover a variety of needs from trips to hospital and shopping, to social activities. Her aim is to try and bring back the Kampong spirit. But is the scheme financially prohibitive? Janice gives an example that a 3 hour trip to a hospital with a driver and a companion would cost in the region of $300. Is that too expensive? Tune in and find out more about the scheme and decide if it is a workable for Singaporean’s older generation.
